The Coin Galleries: Indo-Greeks: Nicias (Nikias) (c. 90-85 BCE)

Nicias (or Nikias) seems to have followed Theophilus as he uses the same monograms But his reign must also have been short, as suggested by the rarity of his coins.

Nicias

Nicias, Silver tetradrachm
Weight: 9.76 gm. Diameter: n.a. Die axis: 12h
Bust of king right, Greek legend around: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ / NIKIOY
(Basileos Soteros Nikiou ... of King Nicias, the savior)
Armed deity standing left, holding palm and conferring blessing with his right hand
Kharoshthi legend around: maharajasa tratarasa / nikiasa
Reference: MIG ---, Bop ---
This type was unknown as a tetradrachm until recently, although the drachm denomination was known. Mitchiner describes the figure on the reverse as an "armed warrior" while Bopearachchi identifies him as the king himself. Considering that he is holding out his right hand in benediction, a pose often assumed by deities on Indo-Greek coins, it seems to me more likely that this was intended to represent a deity.
