The Coin Galleries: Western Kshatrapas: Visvasena

Visvasena was the son of Bhartrdaman. He started issuing coins as kshatrapa in the year S. 214, while his father was still in power, and continued doing so until 226, even though his father's series ended in 217. Why he never assumed the title of mahakshatrapa is not known. It appears that the main line of the Kardamaka dynasty, begun by Chastana in what was probably year 0 of the Saka era, ended 217 years later with Visvasena. His successor, Rudrasimha II, did not name a kshatrapa or mahakshatrapa as his father.
