The Coin Galleries: Rebels against Rudrasena I:
Satyadāman and Isvaradeva

Although Rudrasena I had a relatively long reign of about 24 years, it was not entirely peaceful. It appears he faced at least two rebellions. The first was from his cousin Satyadāman, the son of Dāmazāda and brother of Jīvadāman. Remember that Dāmazāda was the older brother of Rudrasimha I and apparently lost his throne to Rudrasimha. When the latter died, Dāmazāda's son Jīvadāman apparently came to power, as he issued coins from S. 119 to 121. But Jīvadāman's reign was cut short by Rudrasimha's son Rudrasena. Jīvadāman must have been put to death, but it appears his (presumably younger) brother Satyadāman did not give up the fight. We know of coins of Satyadāman for one year only: S. 124. It is conceivable that these coins were issued with Rudrasena's approval, but the brevity of the series suggests otherwise. Two of his coins are presented below, the first with the normal Prakrit legend and the second with a rarer Sanskrit legend.

Another rebellion seems to have come from Rudrasena's own brother, Isvaradeva, some time in the 130's. This is a newly discovered prince and you can read more about him in my 2009 paper in the Journal of the Oriental Numismatic Society 201.
