The Sultanate of Madura was a short-lived sultanate in southern Tamil Nadu. The area had been made the southernmost province of the Delhi Sultanate by Muhammad bin
Tughluq around 1330, but the huge distance from Delhi made controlling the province almost impossible and quite soon the appointed governor declared himself the sultan and
took tha name Ahsan Shah in 1334. The sultanate, however, did not last even 50 years as it was conquered in 1378 by Bukka Raya I of the newly emerging Vijayanagar
empire.
