The Coin Galleries: Dhar

The state of Dhar was in the Malwa region of what is now western Madhya Pradesh. From the 9th through the 13th centuries, the area had been under the rule of Paramara Rajputs, after which time it was incorporated into the Delhi Sultanate and then the Mughal empire. In the 18th century, it came under Maratha control, and the Peshwa created a fiefdom for the descendants of the original Paramara family. Only copper coins were struck in the state, in a very limited coinage. In 1819, the state came under British protection and the 1880's, the state issued coins in the name of Queen Victoria. No coins were struck after that time, with British India coinage circulating freely in the state.
